The Biodiversity Research Association (BAD) is a science-based, solution-oriented non-governmental organization that brings the expertise of its multidisciplinary team from the field to the laboratory, from data to policy. Our aim is to protect species and habitats, close knowledge gaps, combat wildlife trafficking, and strengthen nature conservation policies with reliable data.

Who are we?

The Biodiversity Research Association (BAD) is a science-based, solution-oriented non-governmental organization that brings the expertise of its multidisciplinary team from the field to the laboratory, from data to policy. Our aim is to protect species and habitats, close knowledge gaps, combat wildlife trafficking, and strengthen nature conservation policies with reliable data.

Our approach

We collect environmental DNA traces from water, soil, and air and analyze them using metabarcoding and high-capacity sequencing. This allows us to quickly and evidence-basedly determine the species composition, invasive/threatened species, and ecosystem health of a region without disturbing living organisms. We combine this data with spatial modeling and decision-support tools to define conservation priorities.

Collaborations and Impact

BAD develops joint projects with universities, public institutions, municipalities, the private sector, and other NGOs. An impact logic model is determined at the start of each project; output-result-impact indicators are monitored. Our success criteria include the number of species monitored, risk reduction in critical habitats, detection/prevention rates of illegal activities, the number of participants who received training, and recommendations included in policy documents.

Our Ethical Principles

  • Respect for animal welfare and priority given to non-invasive methods.

  • Full compliance with permits and regulations.

  • Fair collaborations and local stakeholder participation

  • Open, verifiable and repeatable scientific processes

Our Programs

Scientific Research - Biodiversity Research Association

Scientific Research

We conduct ecosystem monitoring, species distribution and trend analysis, genetic diversity indicators, and risk assessments. The evidence we produce provides direct input to site management plans and conservation strategies.

More
Wildlife Trafficking - Biodiversity Research Association

Combating Wildlife Trafficking

We use science to make the weak links in the smuggling chain visible. We track illegal trade using eDNA and genomic species identification, and prepare scientifically sound reports in coordination with relevant authorities. We aim to reduce demand through public awareness campaigns.

Species and Habitat Conservation - Biodiversity Research Association

Species and Habitat Conservation

We develop action plans for endangered species and sensitive habitats, and support restoration and adaptive management practices. We adopt a preventive conservation approach; we conduct long-term monitoring in critical areas such as corridors, wetlands, forest and coastal ecosystems.

Education, Volunteering and Participation

We organize hands-on trainings, workshops, and citizen science programs for researchers, students, teachers, and local communities. We involve our volunteers in data collection, sampling logistics, and awareness-raising activities.
